Activate Mobile Data on a Samsung Phone: A Traveller's Checklist

How to activate mobile data on a Samsung phone when you travel, plus the eSIM settings, APN and roaming toggles that stop data working abroad.

What "activate mobile data" actually means on a Samsung

There are three separate switches that all have to be in the right position before a page will load:

  1. Mobile data - the master switch for cellular internet on the device.
  2. The data SIM - which line (physical SIM or eSIM) the phone uses for that data.
  3. Data roaming - a separate permission that many phones require before a travel eSIM is allowed to connect at all.

Most "my data is not working" problems on a trip are one of those three, not a broken plan.

Turn mobile data on (the standard path)

On most current Samsung phones running One UI:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connections.
  3. Tap Mobile networks.
  4. Turn on Mobile data.

The fastest route is the Quick Panel: swipe down from the top of the screen twice and tap the Mobile data icon so it is highlighted. If the icon is grey, tap it once and wait a few seconds - the phone needs a moment to attach to the network.

If the toggle will not stay on, the phone is usually not detecting a usable SIM. Check Settings > Connections > SIM manager and confirm the line is listed and enabled.

Set the right SIM for data (the step travellers miss)

If you have a home SIM plus a travel eSIM installed, the phone may still be trying to use the home SIM for data - which, abroad, means no data or a very large bill.

  1. Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
  2. Under Preferred SIMs, set Mobile data to your travel eSIM.
  3. Leave Calls and Messages on your home SIM if you want to keep receiving SMS one-time codes.

This is the single most common fix. It is also worth knowing that the eSIM has to be installed and switched on before it can be selected - our compatibility checklist walks through how to check that your Samsung model supports eSIM in the first place.

Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM

A travel eSIM connects through a local network in the country you are visiting, which the phone sees as roaming. On Samsung, that means data roaming must be on for that line.

  1. Settings > Connections > Mobile networks.
  2. Turn on Data roaming.
  3. If your phone shows a per-SIM option, enable it only for the travel eSIM, not for your home line.

Turning roaming on for the travel eSIM does not change what you pay - the plan is already a local plan for that country. Turning it on for your home SIM is what causes surprise charges.

Check the APN if data connects but nothing loads

If the signal bars show and the phone says it is connected, but pages time out, the APN (access point name) is the usual culprit. APN details come from the plan's own product record, so use the values supplied with your eSIM rather than copying settings from a forum.

To check or edit:

  1. Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names.
  2. Select the travel eSIM's APN entry.
  3. Compare the fields against the values provided with your plan.
  4. Save, then toggle Mobile data off and on again.

If you are setting up a plan for a specific destination, the country store pages carry the plan details, and our destination guides cover what to expect on the ground - for example Japan eSIM plans and networks and Korea eSIM plans and networks.

Quick decision table: symptom to fix

What you see Most likely cause What to do
Mobile data toggle grey or will not stay on No SIM detected, or eSIM not installed Check SIM manager; reinstall or re-enable the eSIM
Signal bars show, no internet Wrong data SIM selected Set Mobile data to the travel eSIM in SIM manager
Data works at home, not abroad Data roaming off Turn on Data roaming for the travel eSIM
Connected but pages time out APN missing or wrong Enter the APN from the plan's product record
Very slow, or drops to 3G Network mode set to an older standard Set Network mode to 5G/LTE auto
Data stops after a few days Plan data allowance used Check the plan's data amount and top up if needed

Two more settings worth checking before you fly

Network mode. Under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode, choose the option that includes 5G/LTE and 3G/2G fallback. Locking the phone to one standard can leave you with no service where that standard is not deployed.

Data saver and per-app restrictions. Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saver can block background data for apps you actually need, such as maps. If an app works on Wi-Fi but not on cellular, check its individual data permission in the same menu.

If it still will not connect

Work through this in order, waiting about 30 seconds between steps:

  • Toggle Mobile data off and on.
  • Toggle Airplane mode on for 15 seconds, then off.
  • Restart the phone.
  • Re-seat the eSIM: SIM manager > the eSIM > remove, then reinstall it.
  • Try Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi passwords too, so do it last.

If none of that works, the issue is usually on the plan side rather than the phone. Our help centre covers setup, activation and compatibility, and the setup guides include QR installation steps. Existing customers can check an order with order lookup.

Doing this on arrival, not before

You can install a travel eSIM at home and leave it switched off until you land. On arrival, the sequence is: enable the eSIM, set it as the data SIM, turn on data roaming, then turn on mobile data. That order avoids the phone briefly trying to use your home SIM abroad.

If your trip crosses more than one country, it helps to know how a single plan behaves across borders - see one eSIM across Japan, Korea and China.

Before you buy

Settings only get you so far - the plan has to match the country you are in. Pick your destination and buy the eSIM in its country store on yuzusim.com: the Japan store, the South Korea store, the China store or the Hong Kong store.

Why is mobile data not working on my Samsung when I am abroad?

The three usual causes are: the travel eSIM is not set as the data SIM, data roaming is switched off for that line, or the APN is missing. Check Settings > Connections > SIM manager first, then Mobile networks.

Do I need data roaming on for a travel eSIM?

On most Samsung phones, yes. A travel eSIM connects through a local network in the country you are visiting, which the phone treats as roaming. Enable roaming for the eSIM line only, not for your home SIM.

Where do I find the APN settings for my eSIM?

The APN values come with the plan's own product record. Use those rather than copying settings from a forum, and enter them under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names.

Can I keep my home SIM active while using a travel eSIM for data?

Yes. In SIM manager, set Mobile data to the travel eSIM and leave Calls and Messages on your home SIM if you want to keep receiving SMS verification codes. Just make sure data roaming stays off for the home line.

My Samsung shows signal bars but no internet. What now?

That pattern usually points to the APN or to the wrong data SIM being selected. Confirm the travel eSIM is the data SIM, check the APN, then toggle mobile data off and on.
